Fruits of warmer weather

AS the weather gets warmer, Juyang grapes have been flourishing in the vineyards in Anting Garden where vines are already heavy with fruits.

The grapes are expected to be ripe and ready for shelves as early as late June. Known for their fine quality, big size and great sugar content, this breed has been selected for supply to World Expo 2010 Shanghai.

The breed used to ripen in mid or late July but for the sake of the Expo, efforts have been made this year to advance its ripening. The vineyard has expanded its greenhouses by more than 12 hectares to nearly 17 hectares, in which five breeds are grown: Jufeng, Tengren, Zuijinxiang, Zitiqiu and Jumeigui.

Gift packs have also been prepared. Consisting of four boxes each containing 24 grapes, the Juyang gift pack of 96 grapes will be sold at around 150 yuan (US$21.96). They will be available both in the Expo Park, and in Huoju Village, where the vineyard is located.

Also, Malu Grapery where Shanghai Malu Grape Festival is scheduled to kick off in early July should not be neglected. This year, six early-ripening breeds have been introduced, namely, Yatomi Rosa, Augusta, Zaoheibao, Jingya, Xile and 87-1.

After enjoying these delicious grapes, tourists may also choose to visit Huating Home, where they can fish, pick vegetables and fruits, and savor rural-style cuisines. Free of the urban roar, here they can savor a real Happy Farm.
