Gaining recognition for scientific progress
JIADING District has been honored for its technological achievements by the central government after years of efforts to nurture new industries such as the Internet of Things, promote the development of new energy car industry and the construction of the "smart city."
The district received the title of "National Advanced District of Scientific Progress" from the Ministry of Science and Technology. It is the most authoritative appraisal of the contribution a district has made to scientific progress.
The Shanghai Internet of Things Center recently settled in Jiading District. Currently, more than 100 companies and several high-end research and development platforms have located in the district. A 500 million yuan (UD$78.1 million) development fund and a technology incubator have also started operation in the district.
The arrival of these companies has put a spotlight on scientific development in Jiading. Aside from companies in the Internet of Things, a group of new energy car makers, auto parts manufacturers and battery makers have also settled in the district this year. Construction of the Shanghai headquarters of China Electronics Technology Group Corporation with a planned area of 66.67 hectares has started. By 2015, Jiading plans to establish a research fund worth 2 billion yuan in a bid to encourage the development of new strategic industries.
On December 6, a demonstration of smart community life was held in a neighborhood in Jiading New Town, where room lights, curtains and home appliances were controlled with a 7-inch touch screen. The screen can also provide community news and life tips for residents. Scattering around the scenic spot of Shigangmen Pond near the neighborhood, several environment monitors were sending temperature, humidity and noise data to the environmental protection bureau.
So far, the "smart city" demonstration and application has been pushed forward in Jiading New Town. In the future, all traffic lights in the smart city will be adjusted according to the real-time traffic flow. Community hospitals will be able to check a patient's heartbeat and pulse through remote tests.
