Gardens offer more than floral delights

WITH the sun shining, but without being unbearably hot, April and May are the best months for an outing in Jiading District.

With a wealth of destinations, visitors can not only appreciate the beautiful scenery the area offers, but also savor some culture and rural traditions as well as purchase locally produced goods.

Guyi Garden

In cooperation with the Humble Administrator's Garden in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, Guyi Garden in Jiading District is holding a "Peony Flower Show."

The garden is displaying 2,000 tree peonies, known as mudan in Chinese, and over 500 herbaceous peonies, known as shaoyao in Chinese.

Guyi Garden is famous for its five main features: a bamboo forest, winding brooks, ancient buildings, couplets written on scrolls and artistic sidewalks.

In the coming summer and autumn, there will be more flowers blooming in Guyi Garden such as lotus and sweet osmanthus, so visitors can be surprised by floral beauty in whatever season they visit.

The orchard is famous for its peach and pear trees, as well as the breeding of aquatic products and fowl. It also offers the chance for visitors to taste traditional rural cuisines.

Spring is the best time to visit when the pinky peach blossoms are in full bloom.

Visitors can also get involved with traditional rural activities such as looking for freshly laid eggs, picking wild vegetables, grinding soybean to make bean curd and fishing.

Before leaving, there's also the chance to purchase free-range chickens, pigeons, eggs and organic rice reared by local Jiading people. They are all free from pollution and chemical additives.

Starting from the end of June to the beginning of September, visitors can also find juicy peaches and pears in Lijiang Orchard.
