Good planning the key to city's success
FROM footpaths in the fields to broad thoroughfares, from shabby rural houses to modern high-rises, from farmland to automobile hub, from lonely town to thriving city - Anting International Automobile City has grown in leaps and bounds.
All it is now was just out of a concept when the Automobile City started, but the functional positioning was clear from the very beginning: it would not be a simple copy of other domestic "automobile cities." Instead, it was envisioned to become a comprehensive automobile new city combining industrialization and urbanization.
Seven quick transport channels connect Shanghai International Automobile City to the city center, ensuring an efficient and convenient traffic network for the automobile hub. Supporting facilities, including electric supply, gas, water, communication, cable TV, environmental protection and greening, have gradually been perfected.
Now, the central area of the Automobile City is becoming bigger and bigger. A few years ago Anting Mansion used to be the highest in Anting Town, but now it's already out of the top 10.
The Automobile City now boasts blue sky, clean water and green lawns in the daytime and colorful lights at night. New scenes such as the Anting Old Street, Citizen Square, Automobile City Mansion and Automobile Exhibition Park have beautified the city.
All the four well-planned speciality streets have been completed. Anting Old Street, which displays the history of Anting, has become a leisure pedestrian street featuring Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties architecture and the splendor of Jiangnan (region in the south of the lower reaches of Yangtze River) watertown after three and a half years of reconstruction. The nine-story Yong'an Pagoda stands proud, as do the stone bridge, roads and ancient trees. The Great Buddha Hall at the ancient Puti Temple is always waiting to inspire visitors.
Four key commercial zones have taken shape - on both sides of Moyu Road more than 10 financial institutes have gathered, showing the formation of a financial street; near the F1 Circuit the 28-story Tangchao Hotel rises from the empty land as Automobile City's first five-star hotel. Besides, the first Level A office building in Automobile City - the Automobile City Mansion - has attracted many famous enterprises. On Xinyuan Road, more than 100 stores have opened and become the new highlight of the local service industry.
A decade ago few people in Shanghai knew about Anting. But now, the most exciting car race - the F1 Grand Prix - is held here; many of world's top 500 enterprises have settled here; international exhibitions take place here; international outsourcing platforms have been established here; and foreign and domestic buyers and visitors keep coming here.
The construction of the Automobile City can be considered as the epitome of Shanghai's modern development. It not only displays the glory and dreams of the international metropolis of Shanghai, but also showcases the ability and determination of Shanghai to carry out giant projects.
