Yang Yibin, marketing director of Shanghai Juss Event Management Ltd, said contract negotiations were ongoing and the result would be known in November at the latest.
Also Ecclestone revealed that Beijing would probably be on the F1 map in addition to Shanghai.
Michael Schumacher finished 10th, however he was undeniably one of the most popular racers on the circuit.
As soon as he donned the helmet and gloves at the track, fans shouted his name and the German national flag was waved all over the circuit.
"I've got so many beautiful memories here," he said. "The passion of Chinese fans is one main part of it."
Schumacher guaranteed the box office. The three-day event attracted total crowd numbers of about 155,000.
On race day, a crowd of 85,000 turned out to watch.
World Expo elements also distinguished this year's F1 from others and Expo theme songs were performed by a choir of teenage students before the race.
