Grassroots cultural creations become a hit

RESIDENTS in Xincheng Community have set up a choir, a classical music group, a flat drum team and an electro-acoustical band to promote grassroots culture. More than 30 songs, poems and dances created by art lovers in the area have won awards.

Knitting works have become popular in the community in recent years. Shen Yunbao, a retired teacher, organized a dozen residents to set up a knitting team, and the fashionable works will be donated for charity. Meanwhile, Zhang Aiguo has become a hot talent in dancing by learning from teach-yourself CDs. She has organized an Autumn Dancing Team and created more than 20 dancing programs.

Residents prefer original programs related to their daily life in the community, to those programs bought from professional troupes, according to a survey in the area. So 13 cultural teams have been established and more than 100 original programs created. The community has set up a special fund for creating original cultural performances.

"Our Road," a duet, won a silver medal last year at the singing contest of eastern China. The songwriter Zhang Kun is a factory worker who used to have little knowledge of music score. After joining the electro-acoustical band, Zhang has become very interested in writing songs.

With the financial support and the help from the professionals, original works won many awards. "Being Twinned" won silver medal of the story-telling contest in the region of Shanghai, Beijing and Chongqing, and chorus "Theme of the Sunshine" won the gold award at Shanghai Spring Music Festival.

Meanwhile, the community spent 500,000 yuan (US$79,376) in renovating an old story-telling arena into a multi-functional stage. Every year there are around 30 performances on the stage. At the end of last year, the community also opened a weibo account to release the information of upcoming performances.
