Green car revolution starts here

JIADING District will become the first international demonstration district for electric vehicles in China, according to an announcement made at the 25th World Electric Vehicle Symposium and Exposition held in the southern city of Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, from November 5-9.

The designation is considered a major step in China's push to promote the development of non-polluting vehicles in the world's biggest car market. The Jiading demonstration project will focus on three areas: public transport, government and public service, and private purchase and rent. Hybrid, all-electric and fuel-cell vehicle will be used in the demonstration.

By 2012, Jiading is hoping that individuals will own 11,000 clean-energy vehicles. As part of that effort, the district will build a series of charging stations and hydrogen-fueling stations. Five to six all-electric bus lines and a fuel-cell bus line will be established in the district.

Electric-powered vehicles will be used to deliver mail, provide taxi services and form rental-car fleets.

Early next year, a trial driving center for green cars will open to the public in the district's auto exposition park. That will give people the chance to test drive clean-energy vehicles and overcome concerns they may have about refueling and driving performance.

At the same time, a demonstration and assessment center, a business model innovation center and an operation and service center for new-energy vehicles also will be established to assist carmakers home and abroad participating in the demonstration project.

In 2009, Jiading accounted for 57 percent of Shanghai's vehicle production, with output of 717,000 units. The district is home to four green-vehicle manufacturers and 10 research and development institutes for new energy vehicles. Companies specializing in parts for the new technology vehicles are also mushrooming in the district, forming a chain from the research lab to mass production.
