Harsher punishments cut down on driving violations

The number of drivers failing to observe traffic lights in Jiading decreased 40 percent last year after the introduction of stricter punishments.

Last year 3,953 drivers were punished, down 40.6 percent from 2012.

Nowadays many drivers stop in front of the yellow light instead of accelerating to go through.

Drivers running red lights can face losing six points from their license. Once a driver loses 12 points, he or she will have to resit the driving test.

Tong Zeyun drove through a red light and lost six points in October. Previously he had lost eight points, so altogether he lost 14 points and he was banned from driving.

The test to get his license back was tougher than he expected and it took him over 40 days before he could get back on the road again.

In some cases, such as where the number plate is covered up or driving at 50 percent over the permitted speed, 12 points will be deducted all at once.

Recently a driver who used a car without a number plate to take his child to school was caught by police.

Twelve points were immediately deducted from his license, traffic police said.
