Health club becomes second home to migrant workers

A migrant worker surnamed Zhang went to Dazhong Adolescent Health Club in Jiading District's Anting Town to consult experts.

After more than one hour's consultation, Zhang left the club with all smiles.

Since 2010, the club has provided consultations for over 1,500 visitors.

According to statistics, there are 183,500 adolescents in Jiading with two thirds from outside Shanghai.

Dazhong Adolescent Health Club was set up to provide a platform for this group of people to talk about life issues, including sex, reproduction and emotional problems.

The club not only provides one-to-one consultation, but also holds classes. Since last year, it has held 38 training sessions and activities for 31 enterprises in the area.

The club also organizes youth forums, match-making parties and labor skills competitions.

The Family Planning Association of China and Shanghai recently gave awards to the club for their pioneering work in this field.

The club has held a sex and reproductive health class for hair salon workers. "We have never received such training before, and we feel it's very helpful," a hairdresser surnamed Zhao said.

After the training, the lecturer and volunteers provided one-to-one consultations to the hairdressers.

Since last August, the club has provided consultation services for 35 unemployed people who seemed to have lost hope in their lives.

A migrant youth surnamed Liu once lost confidence in life. Volunteers of the club talked to him and finally he picked up confidence again.

Altogether 29 volunteers with rich experience in health care, education, psychology and family planning have joined the club since its establishment, and six of them have become backbones.

To support their work, Shanghai Dazhong Private Economy City has donated 400,000 yuan (US$63,492).

Dazhong Company has made a promise to donate 100,000 yuan a year. Jiading Family Planning Commission and Anting Town will also provide financial support for the health club.
