Helping Jiading farmers shop near home

THIRTY quality stores will be opened this year in Jiading District, where farmers live far from shopping malls. Some are already doing a good business.

The aim is to fill a commercial vacuum, satisfying the needs of farmers and making it more convenient for them to shop for quality products.

Standard supply and sales channels will ensure quality.

On March 3, local government officials visited two new stores in Malu Town to collect information.

Quick Yaoliang outlet is the first convenience store opened in the commercial blank spot by Shanghai Lianhua Quick Convenience Co Ltd.

Store owner Qian Yaoliang says that since it opened in the second half of last year, daily turnover has increased from several hundred to several thousand yuan.

To ensure success, officials negotiated with the company to assist in furnishing the store and reduce the rent. Since it is close to the downtown area of Malu Town, both the government and the company cooperate to reduce the product prices from the providers, so as to make the store more competitive.

Resident Geng Nansheng says he used to go a long way to buy hawthorn at the supermarket downtown. Now he can buy it a stone's throw from his home, and at a lower price.

Huimin Supermarket was opened last July, with an outlet in Juyuan and another in Malu Town.

"It rained a lot recently which made it inconvenient for me to go downtown to buy food," says Mr Ji, a resident. "I used to worry about the low-quality food at the groceries or vendors' stands, but now I'm very satisfied with the convenience and quality of the supermarkets here."

With the successful experience of the three stores mentioned above, Jiading will set up at least two stores in each town and community outside the city. Two Huimin supermarkets will open at the end of the month at Huangdu and Waigang and three more stores have been allocated in Malu Town.
