Heritage bamboo skills hold their own

BAMBOO carving is a unique art form among Chinese traditional craftsmanship, combining calligraphy, painting, poetry, literature and printing. The intricate carving skills, varied subjects and sundry shapes filled with elegant and humanistic flavor manifest the creativity of bamboo carving.
There have been over 100 famous bamboo carving artists in Jiading's history, thus the region has earned the title of "Home of Bamboo Carving."
During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), "San Zhu" 掳?- three bamboo carving masters surnamed Zhu - were well known for their unique skills. Zhu He, the "Father of Bamboo Carving," set up the base at Jiading with his deep carving skills.
His son Zhu Yin then fused poetry and calligraphy. Subsequently, Zhu He's grandson Zhu Zhizheng specialized in drawing mountains, forests and even donkeys with excellent skills.
In the following Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), bamboo carving artists emerged continuously with innovative technique. Like those in the Ming Dynasty, most of them were good at calligraphy and poetry.
However due to its handmade skills, complicated process and a lot of time required, bamboo carving artists gradually were forced to abandon the skill and turn to other careers.
In the 1980s, Jiading native Hu Juewen, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress said: "The bamboo carving in Jiading has a profound history with unique artistic value, so it demands to be nurtured and developed." This helped a new age dawn for bamboo carving in Jiading. Because of the support of government and a profound historic base, bamboo carving in Jiading entered a renaissance and dozens of excellent bamboo carving artists developed. At the same time a group of bamboo carving lovers and collectors emerged.
In 2006, bamboo carving in Jiading was officially listed in the first batch of China's Intangible Cultural Heritage.
In 2007, the studios of several famous bamboo carving artists were established, which included Wang Wei and Zhang Weizhong, the representatives of the project of Shanghai's Intangible Cultural Heritage. Both are veteran artists that garnered several awards.
They each have their own studios to display the charm of bamboo carving.
