Hi-tech commercialization gathers momentum in Jiading

JIADING is on the verge of a high-tech revolution, as the research results into futuristic innovations like laser and the Internet of Things will be commercialized in the district by the end of the year.

By October the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, in the north area of Jiading Industrial Zone, will become operational after two years of construction.

The company has signed a cooperation agreement with Israeli companies at a total investment of US$45 million to commercialize a high power laser technology project.

In the nearby Jiading Juyuan New Area, the Shanghai Internet of Things Center is now completed after a year of construction, drawing automotive engineering, new energy, and related Internet of Things technology and application centers.

The Internet of Things is a concept whereby the location of any object could be tracked at all times with the use of tiny tracking devices linked to an Internet system.

Jiading aims to attract a cluster of 100 Internet of Things companies by 2013 with an industrial value of 30 billion yuan (US$4.7 billion). A batch of laboratories jointly formed by universities and enterprises will later relocate to the center.

Meanwhile, work is nearing completion on the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Institute of Ceramics' sodium sulfur battery production base in Jiading.

The institute developed China's first, as well as the world's largest, 650Ah single sodium-sulfur battery, making China the second country after Japan to own the high-capacity battery's core technology.

Cooperation talks among the institute, Shanghai Electric Power Co Ltd and Shanghai Electric to build energy storage for a smart grid is close to completion.

Finally, the No. 8 Research Institute of Nuclear Industry will complete the metal framework of its six plants in October, which will produce resin-based composite materials in the future.
