Holiday auto festival a hit
THE 30-day 2009 Shanghai Auto Festival made its debut on September 28 with the theme "Better Auto, Better Life." Highlights of the festival included activities such as a car boot fair, Taiwan temple fair, experiencing the Formula One race track, auto museum visits, folk art week and auto films.
Auto forum
The 4th Jiading Auto Forum and Expo Forum (Jiading) will be held on November 18 in Jiading New City Planning Hall. Celebrities such as Chen Danqing, Jia Zhangke and Han Han will talk about cars and city life. Scholars and citizens will interact on topics like cars, city and suburban work and travel, and discuss what an ideal new city should be like.
Anniversary gala
The gala to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and to launch the festival was staged in the Auto Park on September 28, attracting 8,000 people to a visual feast.
"An Ode to the National Flag" took the curtain for the gala, with thousands of audience members waving red flags to the music. Following the symphony was a poem recitation vividly depicting the scene of President Hu Jintao visiting Jiading and the achievements Jiading has made during the past 60 years.
The song "My Country and Me" performed by famous singer Liao Changyong took the whole feast to a climax. Officials who have worked or were born in Jiading including Qian Qichen, Yu Guangyuan and Elaine Chao sent congratulations to the gala by videos. At the end of the performance, everyone sang together "Singing for the Motherland" to express their passion for the country. After the gala, a 30-minute fireworks show lit the sky and boosted everyone's mood.
"Dancing with Cars"
From 8:45pm to 9pm, Mondays to Thursdays and from 8:15pm to 9:45pm on Sundays, the program "Dancing with Cars" was broadcast on the Travel Channel from September 7 to October 18. The show with stylish dancers and vehicles has attracted high audience ratings.
Viewers were not only attracted by fancy cars and dances, but could also enjoy a sense of pride and belonging as the program was shot in Jiading.
"Dancing with Cars" involved 36 teams of skilled dancers from around the country. They were divided into six groups, each matching cars in the following six special areas: antique cars, Volkswagen, Nissan, GM and concept cars. Thirty-six dancing stories were finally staged integrating the spirit of the brands into their dancing techniques and innovations from artists in related fields.
"We devised the concept of combining the auto brands with dances to show how society has been transformed by the car," says Wang Ping, the director of talent show "Super Girls."
The show achieved high popularity with Wang as the supervisor, and a famous emcee He Jiong hosted the show. Showbiz celebrities and renowned auto brands such as Nissan, GM, Volkswagen and Porsche participated.
Boot fair
During the National Day holiday, the boot fair attracted more than 100 car owners and raised more than 10,000 yuan (US$1,464) for charity.
Owners from famous car clubs in Shanghai gathered in the auto museum fair and sold second-hand objects or DIY products from their car boots. Activities like auctions also set a stage for tourists to contribute to social well-being.
Taiwan temple fair
The 4th Taiwan Temple Fair finished on October 5, attracting over 200,000 visitors in one week. Visitors were able to sample traditional Taiwan food or buy products made in Taiwan. The snack stands were hottest among all with a shop selling 400 fried cuttlefish on the first day of the holiday.
The fair was also part of 2009 Shanghai Shopping Festival, displaying clothes, products and food made in the Chinese mainland. Over 200 famous companies took part in the exhibition.
Track experience
From October 1 to 8, visitors experienced the thrill of the Shanghai International Circuit by driving a vehicle in the experience center or on the first-class kart circuit. Additional activities included mini motorcycling, car excursions, visiting the main stand and news center.
Auto culture
Visitors were keen to see the fancy cars exhibited at the Shanghai Auto Museum during the holiday. The interactive game exhibition hall has been newly equipped with high technology, allowing visitors to test their car knowledge through the touch pad.
The exhibition in the museum includes the history of the car industry, modern technology displays, antique cars and brand culture. Nearly 70 classic antique cars are on show and entry costs 60 yuan.
Folk art
Over 80,000 people visited Anting Old Street during the holiday. Travelers learned from the folk artists about bamboo carving, grass weaving and making mooncakes. Children studied painting and calligraphy from artists, old people sought blessings for their children in the temple, young people went shopping, ate snacks and enjoyed shows in the street.
Visitors could also taste Jiading-flavor snacks such as Anting bean curd and sliced lamb in shops by the street.
Drive-in cinema
Xu Wen and her boyfriend rushed to the drive-in cinema at 6:30pm on October 2 without even having supper. With the usher leading the way, they paid 100 yuan, found a location near the big screen, and set the radio in the car to the right frequency.
Xu was happy to hear the film's sounds coming out of the radio.
"I've only heard about this kind of cinema but I never thought I could experience it here in Jiading," she said.
From September 30 to October 8, four movies were shown in the cinema: "The Message," "Metallic Attraction: Kungfu Cyborg," "The Founding of a Republic" and "Overheard." Every day two or three movies were shown for 300 cars, attracting over 2,000 car owners. The sales volume reached a peak of 200,000 yuan.
Some visitors even held parties in the park. The food, beer and music made the atmosphere more lively.
