Home-care solution for district’s elderly patients

THE Anting Town Community Health Center was the first in Jiading to pilot home care services last year. The Jianjia Nurses Station under the health center serves 21 elderly people at present, with the oldest 91 years old.

“Previously, nursing homes and hospitals were independent to each other. Some elderly people may have been unable to see a doctor in time and that was a worry for their relatives. Moreover, there aren’t enough nursing-home beds to meet demand. In-home nursing can solve the problem effectively,” said Gao Yan, vice director of the health center.

The nurses station works out plans based on demand and health condition and sends out nurses to provide services at home, Gao said.

A retired official, surnamed Hu, praised the services provided by his nurse from the station.

Nurse Zhang helps her elderly patients with basic clinical care such as injections, treatment of pressure sores and massage, while reminding them to take their medicine and giving family members nursing tips.

Professtional care

Zhang said most family members, nannies and unqualified carers lacked the medical knowledge required to look after the elderly properly.

“For example, to help spinal cord injury patients turn over you must use both hands at the same time to hold the patient on the lower part of the body. However, many family members of the patients turn the upper body of the patients first and then turn the lower body. This often causes further damage to the patients,” Zhang said.

Many of the elderly people live alone and like chatting with the nurses. “We’re like a family,” Zhang said.

In-home nursing services are to be promoted throughout the district and many more elderly people will benefit. “Our hope is that all the elderly people will have a good life with reliable homecare and medical services,” Gao said.

Anting Hospital can call on a team of volunteers to help foreign patients who have difficulties with the language to access medical treatment.

When a Volkswagen engineer went to the hospital he faced problems as his Chinese was limited. But he was immediately introduced to Dr Ma Jindan who then became his interpreter.

Ma accompanied the engineer on his visit to a clinic at the hospital and was able to explain to the doctor there what the problem was. Ma was also with the engineer when he went for screening and took him to the pharmacy. Ma was able to explain the right way to take the medicine that was prescribed.

Anting Hospital, at the International Automobile City, established its volunteer service team in 2012 to better serve foreign patients.
