How to apply for Chinese scholarships

THE Chinese government has launched more than 10 scholarship programs to subsidize international students and scholars studying in China. China's Ministry of Education formulates Chinese government scholarship plans on an annual basis and entrusts the China Scholarship Council to manage the recruitment and carry out the routine management.

The following four scholarship programs are especially worth mentioning, which benefit different students.

The Chinese Government Scholarship Program, with a scholarship quota specified according to inter-governmental agreements, was established by the education ministry. Applicants should apply to their dispatching authorities, institutions, or Chinese Embassy (Consulate General).

The Great Wall Fellowship Program is a full scholarship program provided for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It is only for general scholars and senior scholars. Applicants should apply to the National Commissions of UNESCO in their home countries.

The Study in Asia Scholarship Program is a full scholarship program established by the education ministry. It aims to stimulate the flow of Asian students and scholars between China and other Asian countries, so as to deepen mutual understanding, develop education cooperation and promote Asian education quality. It is only available to applicants who come to study in China as general scholars and senior scholars. Applicants should apply to the Chinese Embassy (Consulate General) in their home countries.

The Distinguished International Students Scholarship Program is a full scholarship program established by the education ministry to sponsor outstanding international students who have earned their Bachelor's degrees or above in China and have been enrolled for their further studies in China. It is also available for those who are currently pursuing their postgraduate studies in China. This year, a total of 200 students can get it. Applicants should apply for the program to China Scholarship Council through their targeted institutions.

Chinese Government Scholarship falls into two categories: full scholarship and partial scholarship. A full scholarship exempts students from diverse fees, including registration fees, tuition fees, fees for lab experiments, internships and basic learning materials. A living allowance is offered in addition to free accommodation on campus.

Students can also enjoy one-off settlement subsidies, one-off inter-city travel subsidies, outpatient medical services and comprehensive medical insurance for international students in China. A partial scholarship offers you one or some items of the full scholarship. Applicants are expected to pay for their own international travel expenses unless it is set in bilateral agreements or arrangements.

The application period for the 2012/2013 Chinese Government Scholarship Program is from January to April 2012.
