How to apply for a travel visa in China?

CHINA issues travel visa type L for foreign tourists, which are visas for visiting and travel. If expatriates with ordinary passports from countries which have established diplomatic relationship with China go to Hong Kong or Macau for travel, they can get visa-free treatment for six days when they travel to Guangzhou, Zhuhai, Shenzhen and Shantou in Guangdong Province if they ask travel agencies registered in Hong Kong and Macau to arrange their travel.

The following materials are necessary when the expatriates apply for the type L visa: a fully completed Visa and Residence Permit Application Form, two recent 2-inch full-faced photographs, the original valid international travel credential and a hard copy of it (including diplomacy, official business, ordinary passport and so on), accommodation registration form for expatriates, the purpose-related proof of application (the proof should be authenticated by Chinese embassies and consulates if they are provided by a foreign agency). An official letter from a host is required when the expatriates apply for individual tourist visas, if there is no host, proof of finances that can ensure the tourists can afford the cost of living in China are required (cash, traveler's checks, bill of exchange, debit cards, etc, to the value of US$100 a day).

Expatriates' visas should be applied by themselves at the Exit-Entry Administration Department of Shanghai Public Security Bureau. Group travel visas can be handled by a travel agency. For people coming to China to visit a doctor, their relatives or host in China can act on their behalf.

Foreign tourists can travel in China within the time limit of their visas. They can apply for an extension of the visa at their local public security bureau. Tourists must fill in the departure card when their visit is completed, and leave the country from an international port open to foreigners after getting their certificates checked and the seal for exit inspection. If tourists lose their passports in China, they can only leave after informing the exit-entry department of the local public security bureau. A certificate is then issued by the public security bureau in China to the consulate of the tourist's country in China, and a temporary passport can be applied for.
