Huyi Highway wider and better
Huyi Highway, also known as the Shanghai-Yixing Expressway, has been undergoing renovations since last August and reopened with six lanes both ways at the end of last year.
The expressway has a history of more than 80 years now. Originally it was a gravel surface road just a little more than three meters wide.
The Huyi Highway was last renovated 15 years ago.
At the beginning of 2000, the expressway was expanded from two lanes both way to four lanes.
It links Shanghai with neighboring Jiangsu Province. Running through Nanxiang, Malu, Jiading Town and Waigang, it鈥檚 a major road in Jiading and renovation was necessary because of the increasing number of vehicles using the route.
鈥淥n the one hand, the Phase II of Jiading-Minhang Elevated Road connects with the Huyi Highway, thus the traffic is set to be heavier. On the other hand, the road is dilapidated and needed a facelift to make it match Jiading New City,鈥 Pan Yulong, deputy director of Jiading Construction Management Committee, said.
The renovation project started from Huxiang Highway near South Hezuo Road to Yecheng Road, which is 5.97 kilometers long.
The expressway was expanded to six lanes both ways with a speed limit of 60 kilometers an hour.
There are non-motor ways and pedestrian ways on both sides of the new expressway.
The concrete separation belts in the middle of the road will be replaced by two-meter wide greenbelts. Also, trees will be planted on both sides of the road.
Eighty years ago, there were only four roads in Jiading, and the Huyi Highway connected Jiading with downtown Shanghai, which was critical for Jiading, according to Chen Weiren, former secretary of the district鈥檚 Discipline Inspection Commission.
