Ice factories get busy when the heat is on
Shanghai experienced unprecedented summer heat this year. The city’s hottest summer in more than 140 years helped the ice factories make big profits.
“July and August are our busiest months,” said a manager surnamed Xu at Dazhong Ice Factory Jiading Branch. “During the hottest days of this summer, we received a batch of orders which amounted to 100 tons of ice. It was even more than the total sales in any other month.”
Qida Ice Factory Jiading Branch is another professional company to produce industrial ice. According to Tang, its manager, ice factories enter the slack season when temperatures are below 35 degrees Celsius. These days they receive fewer orders from their clients because of the weather is getting cooler.
But in September, the ice orders will rebound because of the trade of hairy crabs. Ice will be used to keep crabs alive and fresh.
Production halts in winter, usually from December to March.
But small amounts of ice are also prepared at the factories for unexpected demand during that time.
