Industrial recycling saves energy

JIADING District has a well-established recycling system for old automobile parts, industrial wastes and plastics.

Old auto parts

Shanghai Lujian Automobile Part Co in the district is among the four companies with business permits to reprocess automobile parts in the city. The company takes the old parts and reprocesses them into new ones.

"There are plenty of steps to be done on the production line, including cleaning and assessment of how much life is left in a particular part," said company General Manager Shi Wendi. "Then when reprocessing is done, we have to test the parts to ensure that they meet quality standards."

Still, there's energy to be saved. One rehabilitated engine, for example, consumes half the energy of manufacturing a whole new engine.

Lujian has signed a cooperation agreement with Sino Truck to reprocess up to 1,000 tons of material. The assembly line saves 756 tons of steel, reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 7,325 tons and waste discharges by 3,752 tons.

Industrial waste

The treatment of industrial waste is always a big problem in developed urban areas. Jiading produces an estimated 2,000 tons of industrial waste every month.

So what can be done to treat it?

Shanghai Rujiang Environmental Science & Technology Co came up with an answer,

"Industrial wastes are actually a big bonanza for a city," the deputy general manage of the company said. "It takes less energy to recycle wastes than to develop new mines."

During the whole reprocessing procedure, industrial waste is turned into metals and raw materials that can be used in production again.

Plastic pollution

Plastic pollution is now becoming a serious problem in China. Shanghai Xinpeng Plastic Co., is now aggressively recycling the material.

The price of reprocessed plastic is 40 percent lower than new plastic and its service life is almost the same as the original.

Old plastic is reprocessed into trays, bowls and other plastic products sold around the world.
