Innovation houses springing up

JIADING District now has six community innovation houses for ordinary residents at Jiading Town, Anting Town, Jiading New Town, Juyuan New Area, Zhenxin Sub-district and Jiading Industrial Zone.

One of them, at 272 Nandajie Avenue in Jiading Town, is similar to a maker-space and is divided into four areas. It has a micro-machine tool, a lathe tool, a drilling press, a milling machine and other machines, looking like a mini-factory.

It also has three 3D printers, an augment reality globe and robots open for programming as well as other devices, materials and tools. A set of round tables, a projector and a projecting screen are available for science education sessions at the house’s learning and exchange area.

The house will host education summer and winter camps every year with professional teachers and volunteers to offer assistance.

Residents can use multiple channels such as telephones and WeChat to submit applications, said Li Yijia, deputy director of Jiading Town Sub-district Community Service Office.

Free accesses

On weekdays, innovation houses will be open while on weekends residents have to book in advance, Li said. Most of the devices and materials are free and only a few materials will have to be paid for, but at inexpensive prices, Li added.

Li said 3D printing was very popular with many residents completing their computer modeling at home and coming to the house to print out their creation.

Besides general settings, innovation houses have their own features. The house in Anting Town offers automobile model making, modifying four-wheel vehicle models and automobile model racing; the house at Juyuan New Area has DIY sewing technology; At the house in Jiading Town, a batch of 3D printing pens have been bought as well as robots open for programming, which can be remotely controlled by smartphones.

These venues also set up branches in their area to benefit more residents.

In the future, these venues will be offering education menus to attract residents of all ages.
