Investing in employees pays dividends
THROUGH increasing employees' self-worth, encouraging their engagement in innovations and improving labor relations, companies in Jiading District have build up positive corporate culture to retain talent and upgrade productivity.
A case in point is Shanghai Totole Food Co, a producer of seasoning products, which provides a comprehensive training program for employees to unlock their learning potential. Employees can apply for more than 20 courses in the program, which is aimed at improving their professional knowledge, leadership skills and business etiquette in general. More than 90 percent of its manager-level employees were promoted from front-line staff under this program.
Besides a clear career path, opportunities to bring creative thoughts to reality also foster the morale of employees. Shanghai STEP Electric Corporation recently awarded a young specialist for developing machinery technology once exclusively held by foreigners.
The company, which received nine patent licenses last year, has innovation deeply rooted in its business DNA. It allocates tens of millions of yuan for research and development each year, and awards those who have made great achievements with equity shares and housing subsidiaries.
But all these stimuli cannot produce their expected effects without good labor relations. To develop closer ties with employees, Philips Lighting Shanghai Co Ltd hosts monthly birthday parties and annual family get-togethers for employees. Though the company's sales dropped during the global financial crisis in 2008, it didn't lay off employees and instead increased the employees' salary by 3 percent on average to encourage them to stay and get through the difficulties together.
