Jiading, Taicang authorities work together to protect environment
THE government of Jiading District has recently held a meeting with the counterpart of Taicang in Jiangsu Province on a new round of cooperation of environmental protection.
Their cooperation started 10 years ago to clean up pollution along the border, the Liuhe River, which runs between Jiading and Taicang.
Owing to the rise of gasoline price in the past decade, some illegal dealers tried to make money by secretly making the fuel. One started a business at the border of Jiading and Taicang four years ago and set up a processing machine on a ship on the Liuhe River. Once Jiading officials approached the vessel to investigate, they would move to the Taicang side of the river, where the Jiading officials had no jurisdiction. Likewise, they would move back to the Jiading side whenever Taicang officials approached. Later, Jiading and Taicang officials worked together to stop the gang.
"The friendship of both sides started from joint law enforcement," Jiading environmental watchdog officials said.
In another case, a big chimney was erected at a brick factory on the bank of the river on Jiading's side when a new community was just set up in Taicang. The chimney produced black smoke all day round flowing over the new community. The Taicang environment watchdog passed the information to their Jiading counterparts, who immediately went to make investigation. Finally, the brick making process was renovated and the chimney disappeared.
Since 2009, Jiading and Taicang have accelerated cooperation on environment protection. An area of 200 meters wide along the both sides of the Liuhe River is under the monitor. Both sides meet regularly to share the information and discuss the matters of common concerns.
