Jiading bank that can help save lives

The Shanghai Cord Blood Bank in Jiading District has cooperated with 42 major domestic hospitals on clinical transplant and saved lives of 559 leukemia patients.

Cord blood was considered as medical waste in old times. In fact, it contains stem cells which can be used to repair injured organs and cure leukemia.

Compared with traditional methods of collecting stem cells from bone marrow, the collection of cord blood takes place when a baby is born and will not cause any harm or pain to the donor.

The success rate in transplants is 100 times higher. It also has stronger cell proliferation and the cost is only half that of a bone marrow transplant.

Storing stem cells and retrieving them when needed, is not as simple as many people think.

It requires complex equipment to isolate water, red cells and platelets from the cord blood before stored in liquid nitrogen. Currently, the bank has 27 2.5-ton liquid nitrogen store tanks, each of them can store 3,000 to 4,000 cell samples.

At the extreme low temperature of -190 degrees Celsius, the system can prevent cells from cross infection. The system is fire-proof and protected against power cuts.

If someone needs stem cells, they can look for matched cord blood from the database. If the application is in another city, the stem cells can also be transported with a portable liquid nitrogen tank.

Last year, a Jiading girl with leukemia regained health from the stem cells stored in the bank. She is among over 200 patients benefitted from the bank in 2012.
