Jiading medics, teachers, firefighters help Sichuan survivors
JIADING residents have volunteered to help survivors of the Sichuan earthquake rebuild their lives.
Since the earthquake hit on May 12 last year, several groups of volunteers have assisted in health care, police work and education. They include 49 medics, 34 policemen and firefighters and two teachers.
Today four Jiading District doctors are still working in Zhongxing Town in Dujiangyan City, supporting public health centers that were severely damaged.
Dr Zhu Junguo gave lectures this month to local chefs and sanitation officers about food safety for family banquets.
Residents of Zhongxing Town usually hold family banquets outdoors, so the food safety issue is very important, says Zhu. He tries to raise awareness of the significance of hygiene, sanitation and food safety in handling, storage, preparation and serving.
Yang Yiwen, a teacher of Chinese, has been volunteering for nine months at Zhongxing School. Her classes are so popular with everyone that local teachers attend as well to learn from her.
Student Liang Xianbo from the Shanghai Dazhong Technical School comes from devastated Dujiangyan City. She delivered a speech on May 9 at the school to memorialize the quake victims, survivors and helpers.
More than 60 students studying at the Sichuan Province are studying at the school, majoring in computer science, electrical engineering and other fields.
Liang expressed her hope to work in the district if she could find a suitable place.
In its ongoing efforts to help Sichuan survivors, the Jiading government is now recruiting local families who are willing to help families in Zhongxing Town.
