Jiading moves to 'intelligent city' concept
THE concept of a "wireless city" where every corner of an urban area would be connected by high-speed wireless communication, quickly gained widespread attention when the US city of Philadelphia firstly unveiled such a plan in July 2004. Although the Philadelphia experiment has never quite lived up to its original hype, the idea has caught on across the globe.
In 2006, Jiading was selected for a pilot project in Shanghai's efforts to become a "wireless city." By the end of 2010, 464 square kilometers in the district had been connected by the high-speed wireless network.
Jiading has installed wireless systems on street lamp posts and traffic lights, using Wi-Fi and WiMAX technologies. After the installation was completed, the wireless network for laptops and personal digital assistants (PDAs) has been available along most roads and in plaza areas of Jiading. With a flick of the button, you can connect to the Internet from most public places of Jiading's main town area.
A "wireless city" inevitably leads to the next logical step: an "intelligent city."
A project is under way in Jiading to establish a model district for the application of the Internet of Things around the central area of Jiading New Town. About 100 companies involved in development of "intelligent systems," including some industry giants, are now located in Jiading. The value of the industry is now estimated at more than 50 billion yuan (US$7.6 billion).
Construction on the "intelligent city" project involves wireless sensors, radio frequency identification and global positioning system technologies. The systems installed can be used to monitor air quality, water quality and noise pollution and to provide 24-hour surveillance of all main streets, bridges and parkland areas of central Jiading New Town with high-definition cameras.
