Jiading residents put on a variety show to welcome World Expo

JIADING residents from all walks of life are taking to the stage in "Community Culture Month" to welcome World Expo 2010. Teachers, office workers, musicians and entrepreneurs are touring the district with their short plays and music.

On April 10, they gathered at Juyuan Community Culture Center. For many, it was their first public performance.

At Jiading Town Community Culture Center, a band called BOSS performed a skit about how the band was formed 20 years ago. Once all the band members were coworkers at Jiafeng Cotton and Textile Factory.

Though they later went on to start their private businesses, they never forgot their love of music. They reunited this month after 20 years in hopes of bringing pleasure to residents of the district.

"We are good at playing jazz, however, we have little experience in performing short plays," said Cheng Zhijiang, the band leader. "We are doing this to realize a dream of two decades, not for other benefits."

In another performance, Xie Niaoluo, a teacher from Malu Elementary School, performed as a soprano.

"I want to dedicate this to the World Expo and showcase my talent," said Xie who practices singing in her spare time. "I hope to get better with practice and I hope the audience will enjoy my singing."

The play demanding most rehearsal was "We Shanghai Natives," according to Xu Ping, who organized the performance. In February, a scriptwriter began work.

The four players, who had no previous experience, made progress under the instruction of Fan Hanjun, chairman of Kunshan Drama Assn. The audience enjoyed it.
