Jiading sets ambitious goals for clean air and water

JIADING District is getting cleaner and it has set ambitious goals to dramatically reduce air and water pollution through 2010.

The two-year goal is to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide by 677 tons and emissions of oxygen-needed chemical by 4,370 tons. This means the district must reduce the daily use of standard coal by 50,000 tons and build a new sewage treatment plant that can handle 50,000 tons of waste daily.

Air and water in the district are getting cleaner due to stricter water protection, energy saving and industrial pollution controls this year. Among 104 items of environmental protection on the agenda, 56 concern air and water pollution.

This is the first year of the district's three-year campaign of environmental protection. It focuses on cleaning up the source of pollution and pollution in rural areas. Last year the district eliminated (shut down, shifted or upgraded) 314 seriously polluting enterprises. Another 186 dirty enterprises are slated to be removed this year. Renovation, upgrading and reconstruction of big-polluting facilities are part of the plan.

Great emphasis is placed on improving sewage treatment. Human waste will be collected from 40 villages and treated in different plants. In 2008, the district's rate of air quality excellence reached 92.1 percent, an increase of 8.3 percent over the rate in 2006.
