Jiangqiao offers culture through the ages
JIANGQIAO Town of Jiading District is located at the intersection area of Jiading, Putuo and Changning districts, just 15 kilometers from the city center People's Square. With this ease of access, Jiangqiao has a wealth of cultural content on offer for visitors including the newly opened Wutong Art Gallery and China's first museum dedicated to flavor. Let's take a look at these daily life's art forms through words and pictures. Pan Zheng reports.
Search for flavor
In Shanghai Totole Company there is China's only museum with flavor as its theme.
Human started pursuing good flavors ever since they began to hunt and the museum displays ancient scenes showing how our ancestors roasted fish and lamb in their caves. In Chinese characters, the character 鲜 (delicious) is composed of 鱼 (fish) and 羊 (lamb).
Through a cartoon movie, visitors will learn when people started to cook food with water.
The movie displays the concept of the ancient chef Yi Yin that "Ruling a country is like cooking a dish," the invention of soy in the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) and the creation of gourmet powder and chicken powder.
In the next pavilion after the movie, there is an exhibition of kitchenware through the ages, including items made from pottery, bronze and porcelain. It also shows a beautiful scene of kitchens of Chinese families in the future.
At the end of the visit, dozens of electronic screens will show the production lines and process of kitchen powder so that visitors can learn how the seasoning product is produced.
The biggest chicken powder producer in the world, Totole has an annual output of 100,000 tons. In 2009, it launched an industrial themed tour "Journey of Flavor," attracting 50,000 visitors every year.
Now, the Flavor Museum provides visitors a complete display of the flavor's making history, its present situation and its promising future.

Puppets and hand playing crafts
Wutong Art Gallery in Jiangqiao recently held an exhibition of hand playing crafts. On the show there were about 1,000 artworks made by famous domestic artists including Han Tianheng and Li Hongyuan.
The exhibition was divided into four zones to display antiques, artworks, traditional handiworks and ordinary daily supplies - seal cutting, chinaware, lacquer, classical drama puppets, writing materials and pendants.
Xiguting Handiwork Studio made over 10 classical drama puppets of different characters such as the Monkey King, Erlang God and Door God, as well as Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, the two generals of the Three-Kingdoms Period (220-280 AD).
Chinese hand puppet drama has a history of over 1,000 years and enjoys a worldwide reputation for its excellent controlling skills and vivid sculpt of puppet.
In 2006, Zhangzhou hand puppets in Fujian Province were listed as state level intangible cultural heritage.
Besides puppets, the seals, bamboo carving and porcelain plates of Han Tianheng, the dark-red enameled potteries of Li Hongyuan, the performance art of Wang Jianguo, modern chinaware and other kinds of artworks by young artists were also on show.
Inspiration from trees
"Conversation of Life," a wood carving exhibition featuring artwork by Professor Wang Jianguo from the Art College of Shanghai University, opened at Wutong Art Gallery in Jiangqiao recently.
Over 20 carvings, including "Wood Figures" and "Wood Spirit," are on show, and a group of six creative works themed "Possibility of Casting" is especially attractive. One piece is wood and the other five are bronze. All six are in different colors, but in the same shape just like brothers. Visitors can hardly distinguish which one is made of real wood.
In Wang's mind, his works are trees, and he has conversations with his "trees" about meaning of life in his studio every day. The tumors and roots of the trees are the marks they have left during their lives. When talking with his wood works, Wang seems to be breathing together with these trees.
Xie Lin, director of Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center and curator of Wutong Art Gallery, spoke highly of Wang's arts. He said that Wang keeps respect toward the wood carving, its cultural content and unique aesthetics, which makes his art works full of life power.
