Keeping up Lei Feng's good work and selflessness

SEVEN volunteer bases were awarded by Jiading Town Sub-district recently. Another volunteer base to take care of women's health will also be set up by the year end. In recent years, the sub-district has been working more actively to establish the volunteer bases and trying to expand the service range.

There is a piece of doggerel: "Lei Feng has no permanent residence card, so he comes in March and leaves in April," which shows the current situation of volunteers' work in China. Lei Feng, the People's Liberation Army soldier known for his selflessness and good deeds, died in 1962. On March 5, 1963, Chairman Mao Zedong called on the Chinese people to follow his example with his inscription of "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng." March 5 has since become a national day of doing good deeds for others.

The seven volunteer bases in Jiading Town Sub-district provide a stable platform for the recruiting and training of volunteers, thus residents say "Lei Feng" never leaves us now.

Zhou Dan, then a student from Shanghai Normal University, became a volunteer at the Sunshine Rainbow volunteer base in 2009. She has been providing study guidance for kids from poor families. Three years later she still visits the kids twice a week, although she has graduated and become a teacher. "I feel my endeavor pays off whenever I find the kids having made any progress," she said.

To offer better service for the residents, the volunteers have thought of some new ways of doing good deeds, such as patrolling the communities, cleaning the neighborhood area and visiting the widowed seniors.

Jiang Zhiying, a volunteer, visited a 96-year-old man surnamed Fu on March 1 in a drizzle. Jiang checked his blood pressure and chatted with the old man. Fu is one of 720 widowed people in the sub-district.

Last year the sub-district authority launched a special program assisting those seniors with a specially organized group. After training, the volunteers in the group can not only give consolation to the seniors, but also help with their domestic chores.

Xiao Ye walks to the Sunshine Home volunteer base at Lijing Community at 7:50am every day. As a mentally retarded person, he learns drawing, paper folding and some simple techniques here. "I like the place as there are plenty of volunteers here," Xiao Ye said.

There are nearly 10,000 volunteers in 80 teams in the sub-district. They include senior high school students, university students and teachers of Chengjia School. They give some simple yet interesting classes for mentally and physically challenged people.
