Key stage for industry

T he Jiading District government and Tongji University signed a strategic agreement on June 1 to build the Tongji Science and Technology Park at Shanghai International Automobile City.

Jin Jianzhong, Party secretary of Jiading District, said the cooperation with Tongji University was a key step for Automobile City to strengthen its capacity in innovation and research and development, which will help it attract more funding and talent to develop new energy automobiles.

"The district will take advantage of Tongji University's talents and research achievements to build itself into a base highlighted by modern service industry and strength in research and development," Jin said.

Tongji Science and Technology Park will be built east of Automobile City's main area. The first phase of construction will cover 25 hectares.

The park will be established to develop new energy, vehicles, machines and auto manufacturing, as well as information and electronics industries.

It is expected to be involved with Anting Auto Parts Park, Huangdu Industrial Park and Waigang Science and Technology Park.

According to the plan, construction of the park will start before 2010, and several key cooperative projects between enterprises and the university will be introduced.

Zhou Jialun, Party secretary of Tongji University, said the strategy to develop new energy automobiles is a golden opportunity for Jiading and the university to cooperate further.

"The tie between Tongji and Jiading is actually a tie between science and industry," Zhou said. "We will endeavor to make technological breakthroughs for new energy automobiles."

The two sides hope to cooperate in education and to cultivate talent, according to the agreement.

Over the past five years, almost 10,000 students from Tongji University's 10 schools have studied at the university's Jiading campus, or worked at leading research and development institutions such as the national laboratory for new energy automobiles and power systems and the Shanghai Ground Transport Wind Tunnel Center.

These efforts have promoted cooperation between the auto industry and academia.

In 2008, Jiading District carried out more than 5,000 scientific projects. Science and technology accounted for 41 percent of the district's gross industry output value.
