Kiln workers feel the heat in search for excellence
LUO Jingpin’s Shen Kiln has been operating in Jiangqiao for more than a decade.
At 10am on July 28, a new batch of 70 ceramic works was completed and kiln owner Luo said it contained more than 10 works deemed excellent, a rare occurrence for a batch where fewer than 10 is the norm.
The current batch took a day and a night to complete.
Workers kept a close watch during the baking process on the pyrometric cones that can indicate when the items are done.
The ceramic cones soften in the heat to alert workers to ideal conditions in the kiln though the workers’ experience is also very valuable.
The temperature inside the kiln can reach over 1,300 degrees Celsius and the temperature outside up to 80 degrees even at night.
Kiln work is tough but workers are rewarded when they witness the exquisite variety of colors revealed when a batch of ceramic works have completed baking process.
