Lantern Festival lights up end of holidays

AT Guyi Garden Community in Nanxiang Town, 20 senior citizens who live alone were treated to holiday dumplings with community leaders on February 15.

On the same day, residents from Jiading Industrial Zone cooked dumplings and took them to firemen and soldiers who couldn't make it back to their hometowns for the holidays. One soldier was almost moved to tears and said it reminded him of happy hometown memories.

Members of the Taoyan Community also boiled pots of dumplings, taking them to senior citizens who live at the Jiading Social Welfare Home.

The Lantern Festival was filled with traditional entertainment.

Local residents gathered to guess lantern riddles at Guyi Garden. More than 2,500 residents attended the Juyuan Community's outdoor bazaar. In Huating Town, residents played more than 10 traditional folk games.

Traditional operas, including Huju, Kunju and Xiju, were performed at Waigang Town, attracting more than 300 opera enthusiasts.

Other activities include calligraphy exhibitions, singing, dancing and painting displays.

The Lantern Festival takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month, capping the Spring Festival holidays. It takes its name from the colorful lanterns paraded on the day.
