Local Red Cross celebrates a century
TO celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Shanghai Red Cross, a forum was held in Jiading on May 6. More than 200 officials of the Red Cross from home and abroad and scholars doing research on traditional Chinese culture attended the forum.
The forum with a theme of "Chinese Culture with Red Cross Movement and Commemorating the World Red Cross Anniversity on May 8" aimed at promoting further development of the cause of the Red Cross. Experts talked about their understanding of inheriting traditional Chinese culture and the Red Cross spirit.
At the forum, Qian Wenzhong, history professor from Fudan University, interpreted the relationship between Chinese culture and the Red Cross culture.
"Charity in China has long been of spiritual and cultural power with rational self-examination. It interacts with the Western theory of 'philanthropy' and attracts the majority of society to dedicate to the cause," Qian said.
"Nowadays, the fast growth of fortune in Chinese society does not bring the same improvement in social civilization. While people are enjoying more happiness, a rapid collapse is witnessed in values and ethics. In such a condition, philanthropy can play an important role in promoting cultural and ideological progress."
Monk Conglin from Longhua Temple said that China's traditional cultural pith that the Chinese inherited in the past hundreds of years had influenced the public greatly, and the philanthropy culture should be promoted to attract more people to join in. He added that charity organizations should work closer with each other to make the cause greater.
