Local firm sues Apple over Siri
JIADING-BASED Shanghai Zhizhen Internet Technology Company is suing Apple Inc, alleging that the US-based firm's Siri application infringes its patent of Xiaoi system.
On March 27, Shanghai No. 1 People's Intermediate Court opened the first plea hearing with Zhizhen demanding that the infringement should be stopped. But Apple said the patent was not valid and asked to stop the lawsuit. Apple's plea was rejected by the court.
The hearing is due to continue in the second half of this year.
Siri, a voice-activated personal assistant for iPhones and iPads, is popular among Apple fans for recognizing speech and answering queries, including calling a contact, finding the nearest gas station or checking the weather.
Seven years earlier, Zhizhen's Xiaoi's system was able to do the same and the company owned the patent on the technology in China.
Zhizhen is the biggest supplier of intelligent voice-activated systems in the world with over 100 million users in more than 100 countries and regions.
If Apple loses the lawsuit, Zhizhen said it would require Apple to stop producing and selling relevant products and reserve the right to ask for compensation.
