London office is bringing talent back home

JIADING has an office in London dedicated to finding talent among Chinese studying in Britain and one of its successes came when Zhou Mingliang and his team launched their business in the district’s Nanxiang Town.

Zhou, a Jiading native, was doing his PhD at Cambridge when the office held its first job fair there around five months ago.

Zhou attended the job fair and was immediately attracted by the fast development of his hometown.

“I just can’t imagine my hometown’s development is so diversified; the atmosphere of entrepreneurship and innovation is so strong,” Zhou said.

The student had planned to establish a human resources website together with his friends but its location had not yet been determined.

When he heard that more than 200 high-tech firms had been established in Jiading he thought there would be opportunities.

After in-depth communication with local authorities, Zhou and his team returned home. “I was worried about my ignorance toward local policy and had no idea how to start but the reality proved that my worry was unwarranted,” Zhou said.

Local authorities contacted Zhou and the general manager of the industrial park where Zhou based his company introduced him to the enterprises there, and many became his clients.

Jiading’s recruitment office in London is working partnership with the International Universities Innovation Alliance (IUIA).

Their cooperation began in 2015 after China and Britain signed a number of agreements. Since then, IUIA has introduced Jiading through its platforms.

“It is highly-efficient to find someone through the platform. There is also a team that provides professional advice,” said a senior Jiading official.

Jiading has also signed agreements with the Shanghai Association for International Exchange of Personnel Representative Office in London and IUIA to introduce talent from overseas.

In line with the agreements, both parties can create innovative communities, innovative apartments, business incubators and other facilities to realize the integration of the world’s top universities, businesses and financial institutions in Jiading. After the establishment of the recruitment office in London, Jiading has attracted a number of professionals and projects.

An August job fair initiated by the Shanghai Association for International Exchange of Personnel Representative Office in London will invite businesses and research institutions from Jiading to meet graduates from British and US universities.

Jiading is expected to set up more recruitment offices around the world to expand the district’s quest to search for and attract talent that will enhance its global vision.
