Low-rent apartments a big draw

THE Jiading District government has started to attract talented professionals in key industries by offering low-rent apartments.

Song Jin, a designer who works for a German company in Jiading, was excited while talking about the apartment.

"The apartment is fully furnished, and I can move in without worrying about issues like decoration and buying electrical appliance. It is located in a lovely neighborhood, and only 10 minutes from work," he said. "The rent is 1,200 yuan (US$190) a month, and a similar apartment downtown will cost me 2,500 yuan."

Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co invested 16 million yuan to convert 9,000 square meters of apartments in Anting New Town into "homes for talents." The apartments are rented to professionals working in Anting at prices 20 percent below market rates. Forty-two qualified people have already moved into their new homes after the first batch of 106 fully furnished apartments became available.

Some companies say they have chosen to settle in Jiangqiao Town because it has everything they need, including shopping centers and business centers.

At Volvo's headquarters in Jiading Industrial Zone, employees enjoy entertainment at the cultural center. Volvo's manager said it has really helped boost employees' morale.

"The cultural center has enhanced loyalty and cohesion. It is also a place for our employees to share and communicate with workers from other companies," the manager said.
