Magnolia Award winners help boost business, friendship
GERMAN native Klaus Hartig, executive vice president (East Asia) of Jiading-based Fuchs Lubricants (China) Ltd, has been awarded Shanghai Magnolia Silver Award this year, becoming the 23rd foreigner living in the district to have received the Magnolia awards since 1995.
The Magnolia awards, including Silver and Gold awards, were established in 1989 by the Shanghai municipal government to honor foreign friends who have made contributions to the city's economy or social development.
A Silver award winner could be later awarded the Gold award depending on his or her further contributions to the city, and usually there needs to be at least a two-year gap between the two.
But Swedish native Torbjorn Sternsjo was an exemption.
Sternsjo, the then president of Sapa Heat Transfer (Shanghai) Ltd in Jiading was awarded a Silver award in 2009 for contributing significantly to Jiading's economic development, harmonious labor relations and environmental protection. His contribution was so significant that the organizing committee decided to give him the Gold award the next year.
In return for their contribution to the city, a Magnolia award winner often receives stronger support for his or her company from the local government, just like Malaysia native Chang Ket Leong.
Chang, president of Autoliv (Shanghai) Management Co Ltd, received Magnolia Silver Award in 2009. At that time, Chang was worried about Autoliv's ability to survive from the global financial crisis.
The Jiading government responded quickly. Thanks to its support, Autoliv avoided laying off employees to reduce production costs and maintained harmonious labor relations.
It earned 196 million yuan (US$31.2 million) in profit with a production value of 930 million yuan despite the adverse economic climate.
Magnolia awards also promote bilateral friendship.
South Korean Kim Bong Whan, manager of Shanghai Aimoli Pacific Trading Co, was awarded a Magnolia Silver Award in 2010.
In March 2011, with his help, Jiading District signed a letter of intent for friendly relations with Yongsan, a district in Seoul, the capital of South Korea. The two sides are going to launch cooperative and exchange programs in the fields of education, culture, sports and more.
