Maids feel financial pinch in Jiading

JIADING District has an oversupply of maids while downtown areas of Shanghai are facing a shortage of domestic helpers.

On January 5, several job seekers inquired about jobs at Shanghai Xinbang Homemaking Service Co Ltd, and were disappointed to hear no jobs were available.

One of the job seekers told Jiading News her past two employers made up excuses and asked her to leave. She went to Xinbang every day to check for jobs.

Only four potential employers called the company within 40 minutes, but they offered low pay and no deal was made.

"In the past, there were endless calls and many complained that our line was too busy," said an employee at Xinbang. "Since the end of December, demand has decreased at least 25 percent."

The head of Jinguo Homemaking Service Center said that they were experiencing a similar drop in demand and more than half of its maids were unemployed.

Domestic helpers with jobs are also feeling more pressure as wages have declined.

A maid surnamed Wang said she used to work for three families. After she was fired by one family and her working hours were reduced from five to two hours by the other family, her monthly salary dropped from 3,000 yuan (US$438) to 1,200 yuan.
