Making space for 'green treasures'
A 250-year-old gingko tree at the side of a small pond east of Qinle Residential Area in Anting Town has been under heavy protection with blue steel sheets. Xinshen Real Estate Company, responsible for the Zhenchuan Road innovation project, had planned to move the old tree but found its roots were too deep and its survival could not be guaranteed. The company decided to stop the work and redesign the project to protect the tree.
Such things happened on five occasions in the district last year. All these projects were halted in order to preserve ancient trees. All the old trees in Jiading are registered, which are considered "green treasures," including 175 trees over 100 years old and 164 trees between 80 and 100 years.
Jiading boasts the second highest number of old trees out of all the districts in Shanghai, including gingko, cedar, cypress and other 19 species. To protect those ancient trees, three special parks have been set up.
With the weather warming up, more people like to visit the Ancient Tree Park in Anting Town. The park is famous for having the oldest gingko tree in Shanghai. With the serial number "0001," it is considered the "King of Shanghai Trees." The diameter of its trunk is more than 2 meters. The tree was over 1200 years old and believed to be planted during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). In 2001 a park was built in order to protect it. In addition, thousands of other trees were planted in the park too. "It was very rare to set up a park for a single tree at that time," said Qian Wei from the greenery administration office of Jiading District.
Another park for old trees is Ancient Gingko Park at the West Gate of Jiading Town, which was specifically built for 10 gingko trees over 200 years old. These trees are all over 20 meters high, covering an area of 600 square meters, and form the largest old tree group in Shanghai.
