Medical industry leading the way
THE manufacture of precision medical equipment has been a highlight of Jiading’s economic development this year.
As one of the four emerging industrial clusters in the district, the output of the precision medical equipment industry reached 810 million yuan (US$123 million) in the first quarter, up 141.8 percent from a year ago.
Medical businesses have made achievements in high performance equipment, gene testing and cell therapy. Many companies and institutes working in the field have their businesses in Jiading.
The United Imaging Healthcare Co in Jiading provides digital radiography (DR) equipment for hospitals and community health centers.
The DR equipment shortens scanning time, produces higher resolution images and emits at least 30 percent less radiation.
Since its establishment five years ago, United Imaging has developed 21 products that are industry leaders, many of them the first of their kind.
United Imaging’s innovation has also extended to U+ Internet healthcare, a systematic strategy for precise medical care.
Berry Genomics Co Ltd recently launched a non-invasive prenatal testing product which needs only a tube of peripheral blood of a pregnant woman to screen 14 common genetic diseases.
Berry Genomics has set up its genetic testing institute in Jiading to provide services in East China.
For cancer patients, Shanghai Engineering Cell Therapy Research Center in Jiading has begun trials of cell therapy — storing healthy immune cells and replicating them a hundred thousand times.
Participants who join its cell storage program and who develop cancer later in life may receive a transfusion of their own cells to boost their immunity and alleviate or cure the disease.
