'Metro Shutterbug' lives a dream of picturing subway stations
CHANGJI Road East Station on Metro Line 11 was designed to look like Shanghai's small lanes while North Jiading Station has a ladder-shaped pattern. Each station has its own style and features.
"Even without looking at the name, I can tell which station the train is at," said 29-year-old Shen Jie, who is a subway driver on Shanghai's Metro Line 11. The line is a key transport link between Jiading and downtown Shanghai.
He is also known as the "Metro Shutterbug" by micro bloggers. He has toured about 280 Metro stations in the city and taken photographs of each one. After viewing his photos, many people regret missing such beautiful scenes as they rush to get to wherever they need to be.
Asked why, Shen Jie recalled years ago that his employer organized a photography contest with the theme "Whose smile is the most beautiful?"
At that time, Shen was a driver on Metro Line 2. He enjoyed photography as a hobby and the contest required contestants to go to different Metro stations to take photos of Metro service personnel. He had a sudden whim to visit and take photos for all the stations in the city.
"Each photographer has this little greedy thought to take all the good photos himself," he said, smiling.
On April 2, 2011, Shen posted his first picture on his microblog. He called it "Jiejie's Metro Station."
He recorded the beautiful scenery near Metro Line 2's East Xujing Station. He also wrote: "Under the azure sky, brilliant purple and bright red flowers decorate the entrances and exits of the Metro station. The footsteps during sunset, the breeze passes by the crack between the sky and land. The blossoms look like stars scattered in the sky, decorating the Metro and lighting up a little coziness in passengers' hearts."
The post was re-tweeted immediately and some said it was so beautiful, just like a train heading to spring.
From that day on, Shen updated his microblog with beautiful photos of scenery near the Metro stations, the unique decoration of the station, along with vivid and smiling portraits of passengers and Metro workers. Shen is fulfilling his dream of recording the life in the city's subway stations.
The subway network now stretches 439 kilometers and the new stations are built one after another, and Shen is going on to snap pictures of them, too.
