Mosey on down to the old street

JIADING'S Ximen Old Street is an ideal place for a nostalgic visit or an afternoon tea in the warm sunshine. At present its charm is enhanced by a proliferation of several varieties of blooming flowers.

As well, it is remarkable to see elderly people doing sewing or happily playing with their grandchildren in the vicinity.

Ximen Old Street hosts various types of businesses, like hairdressers, clothing repairs and confectionery stores.

A famous malt store near the drawbridge has been in business for six years.

All the products it sells are handmade by a master surnamed Gao with years of experience.

"We can sell almost 100 kilograms of goods per day," said master Gao with a smile. "When we were young, our family always served the malt to relatives and family members."

There are increasing varieties of food becoming available and the packaging gets more luxurious, so it is good to have some original food made of malt.

Master Gao mentioned that people who are interested in malt should visit him before the rainy season as malt will be affected with damp and humidity.

Opposite Master Gao's malt store is Aunt Li's cake shop which has retained its popularity and been in operation for more than 20 years. Cakes are popular in Jiading so every Double Ninth Festival and the Spring Festival the store is flooded with buyers, so aunt Li has to work overtime during these periods.

On the east side of the malt store is a textile store called "Ya Yun."

The store is no bigger than 10 square meters, but people can choose textiles from various designs, sizes and colors.

The boss of "Ya Yun" is Zhang Huizhong who has run the business for more than 18 years.

Wang Yujuan is one of the store's loyal customers. Her daughter-in-law will soon give birth to a child, so Wang decided to purchase a new set of bedding for her grandchild.

She spent 22 yuan, a good price, to buy a 1.1-meter-long cloth printed with a lovely bunny.

People living in the downtown area are used to buying from supermarkets or malls, but visitors to Zhang's store can easily find what they want at a good price and fine quality.

Ximen Old Street has many attractive goods and scenes and is worth paying a visit or simply enjoying an unforgettable afternoon.
