Multi-billion-dollar plan to transform Jiading
A total of 56 key projects worth 40.98 billion yuan (US$6.42 billion) have been approved to kick-start an economic transformation of Jiading District over the coming five years.
The chosen sectors include commercial services, education, medical care, tourism and hotels, and community services.
Officials aim to complete 87.5 percent of the total projects during China's 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).
By then, luxury stores, IMAX cinemas, five-star hotels and high-end restaurants will be a common feature of the district.
No time is wasted in the development effort, and the first neighborhood center in Jiading New Town will open to the public by the end of October. By the end of the year, the Yuehu Lake Clubhouse will be launched. In the first quarter of next year, hotels including a 280-room Howard Johnson hotel and a 415-room Crowne Plaza branch will open as well.
Other projects to be launched include a shopping square and a business center - all contributing to raise the overall service level of the district.
Although the basic living needs of local residents such as shopping, dining, entertainment, accommodation, medical service and training have been met, they still prefer to do shopping in downtown Shanghai for high-end products.
Service institutions and enterprises, which have already chosen the area, are Poly Grand Theater, Ruijin Hospital and Walmart.
