Nanxiang's best private garden gets revival
FAMOUS Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) scholar Qian Daxin once said "There are many famous gardens in Nanxiang. But the best is Tanyuan Garden."
Tanyuan Garden is a private garden that was originally built in 1605 by Li Liufang, an artist who was famous for ink-wash paintings, calligraphy and seal-cutting.
Located in the northern part of Nanxiang Town, the garden was only about 2,000 square meters.
According to historical records, there were several scenic sports in the garden, where Li studied, served his mother and met friends.
The original garden was destroyed during 1644 and 1645.
In 2011, Jiading District Government rebuilt Tanyuan Garden.
The new garden is in the historical area of Twin Pagodas in Nanxiang Old Town, occupying an area of 6,000 square meters.
It features several scenic spots that are replicas of the original garden. The high walls block outside noise and the layout of the garden is elegantly designed with different buildings, various plants and rocks, embracing a quiet pond.
