Networking tools for newcomers

EXPATRIATES living in Jiading often find the hardest part of settling in to their new communities is the establishment of a social network. There's a lot of help at hand, not to mention local hospitality, to help newcomers through the process. Here are just some of the entry points.

The Internet

The Internet is an important tool for expats wanting to plug into Jiading. The official district website - english.jiading.gov.cn - is a good starting point. It provides, in English, detailed information about local news, historical heritage and entertainment venues.

Another valuable website is www.jiading.com, which was set up by local residents. Those who become members of this website are entitled to discounts in hundreds of retail outlets and entertainment venues in Jiading. The one drawback: The website is only in Chinese.

Many local communities in Jiading also operate their own websites, such as that of Taoyuan Community at www.tysq.com.cn. It offers a range of public service information, including tips on shopping and the location of gyms and other exercise facilities.

Food

So much social interaction occurs over meals, and a number of popular restaurants in Jiading are excellent venues to meet new people in a casual and tasty setting.

A newly opened Indian restaurant called Masale, located at 217 Yong'an Street, Anting Town, is one of the current favorites with expats, who are drawn by its rich interior decor and spicy dishes.

Gary's Kitchen at 240 Meiyuan Road, Jiading Town, was opened by a Taiwanese restaurateur 10 years ago and has proven especially popular with many Taiwanese and Japanese living in Jiading. Among the specialties are San Bei Ji (stewed chicken with three cups' sauce) and Taiwan-style Hui Guo Rou (twice-cooked pork).

Sports

Phouvong Mounty arrived in Jiading from Laos last August to take up economic management studies at Tongji University. For him, sports are the best channel to make Chinese friends.

His forte is badminton. He often meets fellow Tongji student Zhou Lei for games at the athletics center on the Jiading campus of the university.

"None of my friends plays better than I do," said Mounty. He explained one of his friends back home is a member of the Laotian national badminton team. "I try to help my friends here improve their skills, and they try to help me improve my Chinese."

Mounty said he has already reached level 5 in oral Chinese proficiency and he has also learned a lot about Jiading from his Chinese friends.

Jiading is home to an array of sports stadiums and athletics facilities, where expats are welcome not only to get some exercise but also to meet new friends.

Investment

Some expats like living in Jiading so much that they want to invest in the district. For those wishing to start up their own businesses, the nonprofit Foreign Capital Enterprises Association is a good place to go for information related to required certificates, import and export requirements and product exhibition and distribution. The association keeps abreast of the latest government policies related to private business and will often help people navigate red tape.
