New Rules for Smoking in Public Places
THE Shanghai Public Places Smoking Control Law will be launched from March 1. Revisions to the city's original anti-smoking law make the ban more specific, which include a list of places affected. Smokers are suggested to pay more attention to the public areas where smoking will be prohibited. Individuals who smoke in banned areas will face a fine from 50 yuan to 200 yuan.
Indoor and outdoor smoke-free venues:
According to the law, indoor and outdoor smoke-free places refer to those with a big number of juveniles and pregnant women. These places include nurseries, kindergartens, schools, maternal and child care service centers, children's hospitals and Children's Welfare Institution.
Indoor smoke-free venues:
The law stipulates that colleges, institutes, other educational places, student dormitories and canteens are indoor smoke-free venues. Other indoor places with a ban on smoking include medical and health institutions, libraries, theaters, exhibition centers, museums, galleries, public service places, shopping malls, supermarkets, public traffic areas and their ticket offices, waiting rooms and indoor platforms.
Venues with separate smoking areas:
Entertainment venues, public areas of hotels, airports and train stations and ports must ban smoking indoors and provide a separate smoking area.
Venues encouraging individuals to have self-control of smoking:
The law suggests other public areas which are not mentioned above to provide separate smoking areas and encourage individuals to have self-control of smoking. For example, some hotels can offer specific smoke-free residential floors and rooms. Restaurants and local enterprises can also set up a separate ventilated smoking area.
