New center provides chance to test-drive electric vehicles
WITH the opening of the China (Shanghai) Electric Vehicle International Pilot City Test Drive Center on May 15, residents in Jiading District are now able to test-drive electric vehicles.
The test-drive center is the first project since the China (Shanghai) Electric Vehicle International Pilot City was officially established on April 22.
Five electric vehicle models are currently available to be test-driven at the center.
Located at the Auto Park in Shanghai International Automobile City, the center is open all year round and visitors can test-drive an electric vehicle for 30 to 40 minutes free of charge.
At present, the Auto City is in talks with BMW and Audi to allow more electric vehicles to "settle down" at the center.
The official website for the pilot city www.evzonechina.com was also launched on May 15. People can get the latest information on electric vehicles and the auto industry from the website.
After registration online, a test drive can be reserved. Reservations can also be made by telephone by dialing 6955-0036.
Zhao Yu was among the first batch of electric vehicle buyers. She bought a BYD hybrid electric vehicle. Comparing with traditional vehicles, Zhao now saves around 700 yuan (US$107.6) each month.
"It has almost the same performance as traditional vehicles. I can drive as fast as 140km/h," Zhao said.
In contrast, Zhang Xia, another electric vehicle owner, seems to have experienced problems with her car. The charge connector of her pure electric Lifan does not match with that of the charge station so each time she needs to charge the car, she has to call the manufacturer to deal with it. Zhao said she would not have bought the car if she had known of the incompatibility problem earlier.
Rong Wenwei, general manger of Shanghai International Auto City Development Co Ltd, said the national standard for charging modes of electric vehicles are varied and the Auto City is now negotiating with power grid enterprises and manufacturers to consider installing different connectors.
Currently, there are 45 battery-charging stations in Shanghai Auto City. Within the year, the number of such stations will be expanded to more than 700 in Jiading District.
