New cultural events enrich Jiading's seniors

WHEN entering the canteen of Jiading Welfare Home, a performance was just being shown for the seniors. "The performers are volunteers from Juyuan New Area and almost all the seniors in the welfare home have come out to watch it," said Xu Xiaolu, an employee with the welfare home.

The seniors here have already got used to watching the performances every month and enjoying the old songs sung by a chorus group every day.

Consisting of the senior home employees, the chorus group was set up in 2006, with the sole task of performing for the seniors at the home.

Though the group hasn't participated in any contest or performed on a formal stage, each member of the group is a star among the seniors. "We're amateurs but the seniors always give us the warmest applause, which makes us very happy," a group member surnamed Ma said.

Volunteers from other walks of life also perform there as well. Zhu Yanjun, 19, a volunteer from Juyuan New Area, comes to the home to sing Yueju Opera for the seniors once every two months. "Comparing with the applause from a formal stage, the smiles of the seniors make me happier," said Zhu, a student of Shanghai Theater Academy.

Besides the performances, the volunteers also bring their paper-cutting works and potted plants to the home.

To better enrich the lives of the seniors, the home also organizes the seniors to perform by themselves. Zhu A'rong, 89, is one of the active volunteer singers even though he often forgets the lyrics on the stage, and the seniors still keep on applauding for him.

The seniors in the home said: "Singing and listening to the songs help us develop a bigger appetite."
