New emission standards apply

ALL new cars, buses, taxis, and sanitation and post office vehicles in Shanghai must meet National IV emission standards since November 1. Those who fail to meet the standards can not have car plates.

Two regional standards - Diesel Oil for Vehicles and Gasoline Oil for Vehicles - will be implemented in September and October. Both were issued in February to make sure vehicles with National IV emission standards will use standard oil. Suppliers need to start meeting the oil standards in July or August.

Shanghai Vehicle Management Office will not accept applications for plates below the National IV emission standard based on the list provided by Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau. The bureau will post the list on www.sepb.gov.cn for vehicle buyers to check before purchase.

Shanghai started on June 1 to pay subsidies for people, private company owners and enterprises who replace cars and trucks with models meeting National IV emission standards.

The amount will vary according to the size of the vehicles and how old they are. To qualify, vehicles must have been registered before the end of 2002.
