New gallery dedicated to donation of artworks
HAN Tianheng, celebrated master of Chinese painting, calligraphy and seal cutting, donated 1,003 artworks to Jiading District this month.
Han also serves as president of the China Seal Cutting Art Institute. The district will build a new gallery to house the collection.
All the works in the donation were collected by Han and have never been on sale before. They include 290 of Han's own calligraphy and paintings, and 250 works of famous masters since the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, such as Zhu Zhishan, Wen Zhengming, Liu Haisu, Dong Qichang, Qi Baishi and Zhang Daqian,
Among the prized pieces are a royal silk writing from the Ming Dynasty with the famous prologue "Lan Ting Xu" inscribed on it, and a gold seal from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) weighing over 300 grams.
Construction is now underway at 70 Bole Road, and the gallery is expected to open to the public in May 2012.
